Dental Do's

Do...keep your appointment! If you must cancel, please do so in advance. If your child isn't there, the dentist will have an empty chair.

Do...talk about your child's first visit in a positive way. Let the dentist or hygienist explain what will be done.

Do...avoid using words like hurt, pain, or scared when talking about your child's appointment.

Do...keep from telling your child about any bad dental experiences you have had in the past.

Do...tell the dentist or hygienist about any fears or concerns your child may have.

Do...keep older brothers or sisters from trying to scare your child about their dental visit.

Do...have your child brush their teeth just before their appointment.

Do...bring only the child who has an appointment to the office, if possible. If other children must come along, do keep them well behaved.

Do...make this a fun and healthy experience for your child! A positive dental experience starts with the family.

Do...take your child to the dentist by age 1. Early, regular dental visits and preventive care will provide a lifetime of smiles!

The Iowa Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is now offering continuing education training on children's oral health online. This online training can be used by any physician in Iowa, and CMEs are free to Iowa physicians for a limited time. For a small administrative fee, this training can also be used to provide CEUs for nurses.

For more information and to access the online training, visit the Iowa Chapter of AAP at www.iowapeds.org.
